THE SIX COPING TYPES
Six ways a person learns to survive
Nobody chooses one of these. It gets poured, like concrete, while a person is busy surviving something. Years later the survival strategy is still running, long after the thing it was protecting you from has gone.
ONE ARCHITECTURE, SIX ANSWERS
Each one is a different answer to the same question
A hurting person once asked: how do I stay safe, and how do I stay loved? These are the six answers.
Pure types are rare. Blends are the norm, which is what both schema therapy and parts work keep finding independently. One wound, several protectors.
So read these as one root reaching for different tools, never as six separate problems. Heal the root and more than one pattern eases at once. Chase the tools one at a time and you will be chasing for years.

TELLING THE NEIGHBOURS APART
Three pairs that get confused
These look alike from outside and are doing completely different jobs underneath.
- Soldier and Saverpair
Both neglect themselves. The Soldier's sentence is I've got it. The Saver's is are you okay with me. One carries the load, the other manages the mood. - Saver and Shamerpair
The Shamer turns the blame inward: I'm the problem. The Saver manages outward, keeping everyone regulated so the verdict never lands. - Seeker and Striverpair
Both are earning something. The Seeker is earning readiness, because preparing feels safe. The Striver is earning worth, because producing feels safe. One more book, or one more win.
WHAT TO DO WITH THIS
Knowing the name is not the same as being free of it
Recognising yourself in one of these is genuinely useful and it is not the work. The pattern is downstream of a decision made under pressure in a moment you were not equipped for, and it does not move because you can now name it.
The diagnostic below takes about six minutes. It names which one leads, which one runs underneath it, and where it is costing you most right now.
